Four teams. All grades. One title.
The Regional Championship returns this November with a sharper format and a direct line to the Meath senior set-up.
Meath GAA has today announced a significant revamp of the Regional Football Championship for 2026. The competition will move from eight teams to four, and for the first time will draw players from senior, intermediate and junior clubs alike.
The regional format was a novel concept when first introduced and was warmly received by players and supporters. Boyne Valley were double winners under Cathal Ó Bric and John McCarthy, with John following up with a further title in a new region, Brú na Bóinne. An Tuascairt, under Tadgh Boyle, are the reigning champions.
In recent years, however, feedback indicated the competition would benefit from a refresh. Some regions had become persistently difficult to organise, interest had begun to wane, and the standard in certain games fell short of what the competition set out to achieve.
The new, tighter four-team format will strengthen every region considerably and extend opportunity to more players across all grades. While some elements of regional identity will inevitably be diluted, the change is expected to bring fresh energy to the competition and dramatically improve standards.
A place on a regional squad will now be hard-earned — and that is the point. Selection should be an aspiration for every ambitious Meath footballer looking to test their ability at a higher level. For those selected, the objective remains simple: win the championship.
A Clear Pathway to the Meath Senior Set-Up
From a Meath senior football perspective, a four-team championship drawing from all grades will be of a much higher quality — and therefore far more predictive of a player’s ability to make the step up to inter-county level.
Meath senior football manager Robbie Brennan has confirmed that senior management will use the competition as the first gauge of potential, with the most promising performers invited into the new senior squad or the senior development squad.
Performance at club level, to performance at regional level, to performance at adult inter-county level — that is the Meath football adult pathway for 2026.
Brady’s Garage Continues as Competition Sponsor
Meath GAA is delighted to confirm that Brady’s Garage will remain as competition sponsor, continuing their wonderful support of the Regional Championship. The distinctive regional Brady’s jerseys will be launched alongside the competition in October.
