Will it be Kilmessan or Killyon who progress to the last four?

The knockout fixtures in the Hurling Championships commence today (Saturday) with games across the Ted Murtagh Clothing & Footwear, Trim Senior Hurling Championship, JM Food Services Intermediate Hurling Championship, K Windows & Doors Junior B Hurling Championship as well as the new B Senior and B Intermediate Hurling Championships.

Kilmessan and Killyon meet with both sides not having won the Jubilee Cup for a number of years, Kilmessan since 2013 and Killyon since 2005 and both sides will view today’s game as a great opportunity to qualify for the last four and once you’re there anything is possible.

The form of Kilmessan thus far in the Championship has been impressive as they look to build on the U-21 Hurling Championship success of last December and they finished second in a group featuring both Trim and Kildalkey, defeating Trim in the process.

Killyon showed very well for long tracts of the group stage but come into today’s game looking to throw off the hangover of the heavy defeat suffered against Ratoath a fortnight ago.  If that game can be put behind them then they possess the capability of pulling off what would be a huge win.

That said, Kilmessan have been going very well throughout the year, winning the Brendan Davis Cup back in May when defeating old rivals Kildalkey in the decider and it is they who enter this last six encounter as favourites.

Boardsmill and Donaghmore/Ashbourne meet in the curtain raiser in Navan in the quarter final of the JM Food Services IHC and this could be quite the game.

Boardsmill were excellent for long spells against Rathmolyon two weeks ago as Niall Weir and Danny Dixon wreaked havoc but somehow contrived to only draw the game while Donaghmore/Ashbourne were very disappointing against Drumree the previous day.

Great work has been donw at juvenile level in recent years in the south Meath town and that is beginning to come to fruition at adult level.  Today’s game is something like the old money of Meath Hurling in Boardmsill who have 6 Senior titles to their name against the new money in Donaghmore/Ashbourne.  Will tradition win out or can the rising force get over the line today?
