Who can end a disappointing season on a relieved note?

It is amazing how a clubs fortunes can change in twelve months and this evening’s Meade Farm Intermediate Football Championship Relegation Playoff Semi-Final is testament to that as both Navan O’Mahonys and Ballivor look to survive in the grade only a year after being beaten finalists and semi-finalists respectively.

Both of these sides would have been pencilled in by many shrewd observers at the outset of the Championship as potential winners of the Mattie McDonnell Cup but in the end both finished bottom of their groups and thus embroiled in the relegation battle.

O’Mahonys started off the group stages with a narrow defeat to Duleek-Bellewstown before dismantling St. Michael’s in Round 2 and leaving themselves well positioned to make a tilt at the knockout stages going into the final round.  That game against Castletown turned into a most disappointing evening for the town side though as they were defeated and that result coupled with St. Michael’s overturning Duleek-Bellewstown saw them rooted to the foot of the Group C table.

Ballivor looked good for long spells in Summerhill on the morning of the Meath Ladies All-Ireland Final before eventually losing out to Moynalvey and would have gone into the Round 2 game against St. Patrick’s confident of getting a win.  However, they lost out again there and that result knocked them out of the Championship before a heavy loss to Walterstown consigned the team from the south of the county to the relegation quagmire.
