Gaels throughout Meath have been saddened with the news of the passing of Tommy Dowd Snr of Dunderry.
Tommy was a talented and skilful footballer whose performances with Dunderry in the late 1960s saw him earn selection on the Meath Senior team for the 1969 Leinster Championship. He was corner forward on the team beaten by Kildare.
He subsequently emigrated to England but continued with his football career and was corner-forward on the London teams that won the All-Ireland JF Championships in 1970 and 1971, beating Kildare and Dublin in the respective finals.
Tommy’s sons have also made notable contributions to the GAA in Dunderry and Meath.
Tommy Jnr was one of Meath’s finest footballers, captaining the county team to All-Ireland success in 1996 and winning 4 All-Star Awards while Kevin has been involved as player and manager with the county’s hurling teams.
Coiste na Mí extends it’s sympathy to the Dowd Family.
Tommy Snr’s funeral will take place in Dunderry tomorrow (Wednesday).
