Opening weekend of action draws to a conclusion
Opening weekend of action draws to a conclusion

It has been a hectic weekend of action in the Football Championships and there is little slowdown in the action on Sunday with six games across the Fairyhouse Steel Senior Football Championship and Meade Farm Intermediate Football Championship as well as a plethora of games in the Meath Cleaning Supplies Premier Football Championship.

Skryne have had a resurgence of form to date this year under the management of Mick O’Dowd and they will be quietly confident of pulling off a result against Ratoath in Ashbourne at 14:00 in Group D of the Fairyhouse Steel SFC.  The Tara side reached the League semi-final where they lost out to Ballinabrackey and a buoyant Skryne are a tricky proposition for any team.  That said, Ratoath have plenty of aces in their pack and will be favourites to win.

In Group A, we have a repeat of the recent PR Coyne sponsored League Final when Ballinabrackey and Summerhill meet in Trim, twelve months on from their opening round meeting in Clonard.  Summerhill won both of those games and will be tipped by many to get their defence of the Keegan Cup off to a winning start.

Group C sees the meeting of Na Fianna and Simonstown Gaels in Páirc Tailteann and the belief of many in the county is that both of these sides should have a great chance of getting out of their group.  The fitness of Shane Walsh for Na Fianna will be pivotal to their chances and word is that Sean Hurley is in the best form he has been since his transfer came through a year ago.  The Northside Blues are reliant on the likes of Sean Tobin and Padraig McKeever in attack and if they hit top form then they will be hard stopped.

In the Meade Farm Intermediate Football Championship, the former kingpins of Meath football meet in a high noon showdown in Páirc Tailteann when neighbouring Navan O’Mahonys and Walterstown take to the famous sod.

Nobber and Blackhall Gaels will contest their Group A meeting in Fr. Tully Park, Seneschalstown.  Incidentally, the pitch there will feature on a TG4 programme in 2025 when the story of the Fr. Tully Cup is told as part of a series.

In Bective, the final of the Meade Farm IFC games will take place and that features a meeting of 2023 relegated side Moynalvey and Drumbaragh Emmets. Can Moynalvey get off to a positive start in what is regarded as the Group of Death or will Drumbaragh pick up the two points?
