The action on the middle weekend of the group stages of our Club Football Championships concludes to day (Sunday) with a very busy program of fixtures on the cards. Can the action match the drama of the games played on Saturday evening where we had a thrilling comeback victory, a game where the winning team won despite scoring only four points (goals win games) and a high scoring thrilling drawn encounter.
Today’s game are all ticket and are priced as follows.
- General Admission – €10
- Student/OAP – €5
- Children U-16 accompanied by an adult attend for free.
Tickets for all games can be purchased via the Meath GAA App which can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play Store.
St. Peter’s Dunboyne and Simonstown Gaels both picked up opening weekend wins and come into this evening’s game in Walterstown knowing that a win would put one foot into the quarter finals. Donal Lenihan was on fire for Dunboyne in Round 1 while Simonstown operated a defence oriented system. Will they be able to keep Lenihan and company quiet while scoring enough at the other end?
Skryne fell to a narrow defeat against St. Colmcille’s two weeks ago and now face a tougher test as they meet near neighbours Ratoath. Ratoath didn’t have to hit top gear when defeating Moynalvey but with Skryne manager Davy Byrne having previously managed Ratoath, there will be little he doesn’t know about the opposition. Can Skryne pull off what would have to be regarded as a mild surprise by beating the reigning champions?
In Group D, two side who will fancy their chances of claiming the Keegan Cup at the end of the Championship meet in Páirc Tailteann when Summerhill and Wolfe Tones face off. Summerhill are perennial contenders while Wolfe Tones last got their hands on the famous cup two years ago. The other game in the group sees Ballinabrackey and Gaeil Colmcille meet in Trim with both sides on a retrieval mission following opening weekend defeats.
Two of the fancied contenders for the Mattie McDonnell Cup meet in the Meade Farm IFC today when Navan O’Mahonys and Rathkenny meet in Páirc Tailteann. O’Mahonys are looking to return to the Senior ranks at the first time of asking while Rathkenny ran Dunshaughlin very close in last years quarter final. Will Donal Curtis be the man to steer them back to the promised land and they are now boosted by the return from America of James O’Hare.
Walterstown and Ballivor meet in the other game in the Meade Farm IFC and both sides come into the game off the back of opening weekend wins. Walterstown could be a shade fresher having had last weekend off while many of the Ballivor panel will have had hurling commitments.
Trim is the venue at half four for a tasty local derby between Bective and Dunderry. Bective were impressive for long spells against St. Patrick’s before ultimately falling short while Dunderry were disappointing against Meath Hill. They will want to set the wrongs of that performance right in Trim but will it be enough to take down Bective?
In the Balreask Bar, Restaurat & Guest Accomodation JFC, there is a very interesting game taking place in Kilmainham at noon as Clann na nGael and Syddan clash. Both sides have started well and a victory here would be a major step towards a place in the knockout stages.
Moving north in the county, all eyes will be on the meeting of near neighbours and keen rivals St. Brigid’s and Moylagh. Many believe Moylagh have something of an Indian Sign over the club they join forces with to play together at juvenile level but this is something they dispute around Ballinacree. Who is correct and who will have the bragging rights when players from both clubs board the bus to Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann this afternoon?
The solitary Coolrite JBFC meeting today sees Cortown and Kilmainhamwood meeting in Nobber. Both sides are two from two to date but who will keep their 100% winning record and who will lose theirs?
