Dunshaughlin and Na Fianna come into their Fairyhouse Steel SFC Round 2 game off the back of victories attained in very different styles two weeks ago. Dunshaughlin got off to a slow start against Donaghmore/Ashbourne in Ratoath but slowly and steadily worked their way back into proceedings before Adam McDermott became the hero of the hour. By contrast, Na Fianna were always in a good position against Curraha on the evening of the All-Ireland Final as they ground out a four point victory.
It is a different story in Group C where St. Colmcille’s emerged as victors by three points against Skryne while Moynalvey were comfortably beaten by Ratoath. For Moynalvey, it is a case of back to the scene of that defeat and they know that a defeat will effectively consign them to the relegation battle. Last year the ‘Cilles reached the League Final before crashing to an opening weekend defeat to Seneschalstown and then ultimately ended up in the relegation semi-final. This year they managed to bounce back from their League Final defeat to pick up a valuable victory over Skryne and while it might not have been pretty at times, it could be the sign of a maturing group of players that they are learning to grind out big Championship wins.
In the Meade Farm IFC, the focus of attention in Grangegodden will be if Drumbaragh Emmets can bounce back from a heavy loss to Rathkenny when they take on Oldcastle at 19:30. Another loss for the team from the northern edge of Kells, would consign them to the relegation battle while Oldcastle know they need a win after a brilliant second half comeback secured them a dramatic draw against O’Mahonys a fortnight ago.
Group C sees two sides who lost out in Round 1 meet in Sean Newman Park. There was possibly more positives for Longwood to take from their loss to Walterstown than there was for Nobber to take from their defeat at the hands of Ballivor. Longwood found a way to get goals in their game and if they can score three more goals against Nobber then they could be well on their way to picking up a first win of the Championship against a side that conceded four goals and scored none on the opening weekend.
Group D offers us what could potentially be the game of the evening when St. Patrick’s and Meath Hill face off in a repeat of their recent Division 2A League decider. That game went to extra-time and it would be no surprise if this encounter was equally as tight. The Ronan Kearns/Daithí Whyte managed St. Patrick’s impressed few onlookers with their display against Bective and indeed the Navan club will have major regrets about not closing that game out while Meath Hill were very impressive against Dunderry, cruising to victory. Castletown plays host to this one and it could be a cracker.
The sole Balreask Bar, Restaurant & Guest Accomodation JFC fixture this evening sees Killbride and
St. Utan’s meeting in Dunderry. Kilbride lost out to Clann na nGael on the opening weekend four weeks ago before having a BYE in Round 2 while St. Ultan’s are pointless after two rounds. If St. Ultan’s are to win they will need to improve in front of the posts as after two matches they average 7.5 points per game which will win very few games in the Championship while their concession rate has averaged 15 points per game. Kilbride have a huge amount of young talent coming through and it would be a surprise if Leo Turley and his vastly experienced management team did not have them primed for this encounter.
In the Coolrite Junior B Football Championship we have one game on the cards when Drumconrath take on the recently formed Eastern Gaels. Drumconrath have a win and a loss to date, the loss coming in Round 2 when St. Mary’s narrowly defeated them. Eastern Gaels didn’t field during the League and have had a baptism of fire thus far in the Championship, shipping eleven goals en route to two heavy defeats. Last weekend they were picking stones on their playing pitch as they look to get it ready for games, but will they be picking up a first win this weekend?
