Hurling Championship Action Continues
Hurling Championship Action Continues

The opening round of games in the Hurling Championships had everything you could wish for with top quality performances, individual scoring feats which were off the charts, surprise results going by what the pundits had predicted and good attendances.  Will we have more of the same in Round 2?

In Group A of the Ted Murtagh Clothing & Footwear Senior Hurling Championship, Trim and Dunderry who both impressed in the opening round, meet in Kilmessan on Thursday evening.  Trim laid down a marker that they will once more be serious contenders for the Jubilee Cup and will be confident of backing up the Kildalkey win with another over their close neighbours but Dunderry will be dogged and will have their eyes on a win. Kildalkey were off the boil against Trim and will need to improve if they’re to defeat a Kilmessan side which excelled against Clann na nGael.  And which one of St. Peter’s Dunboyne or Clann na nGael can pick up a win after disappointing results in the first round?

Group B on Friday evening sees Na Fianna and Ratoath meet in Batterstown.  Ratoath drew with Kiltale on the opening night but Na Fianna slumped to defeat on the Sunday against Killyon.  A repeat performance from Ratoath should see them over the line but an improvement is expected from Na Fianna.  Kiltale and Blackhall Gaels meet on the Saturday in Rathmolyon in a local derby and Blackhall Gaels will need to be much further down the track than they were against Longwood if they’re to pick up the two points.  The third game in the group is another derby as Killyon and Longwood who are joined at underage level meet in Boardsmill.  Both won their first game and the winner here will be well positioned to challenge for the knockout stages.

In the JM Food Services sponsored Intermediate Hurling Championship, Gaeil Colmcille have their first outing after being awarded the points from their game against St. Peter’s Dunboyne and they meet Navan O’Mahonys in Kilskyre. O’Mahonys defeated Donaghmore/Ashbourne on the Saturday of the opening weekend and will be looking to back that up.  Wolfe Tones were narrowly defeated by Drumree and they take on Donaghmore/Ashbourne with both sides in need of a win.  The third game sees Drumree and St. Peter’s Dunboyne meeting in Batterstown and Drumree look well positioned to pick up a victory.

In Group B, there is a fascinating meeting of Kildalkey and Boardsmill in Killyon with both off the back of impressive opening round wins.  Boardsmill defeated Trim and will be targeting another of the second teams here.  Kilskyre/Moylagh showed plenty against Kildalkey to suggest they’ll have a say in the competition but will be conscious that they cannot afford a second slip up against a Rathmolyon side who were impressive against St. Patrick’s.  Speaking of St. Patrick’s, last years beaten finalists in the K Windows & Doors JHC Final will have a tough task against Trim.

The K Windows & Doors JHC & JBHC get underway this weekend with a full programme of games.
