Debuts aplenty as Royals unveil opening selection of 2026

After a break in 2025, the Dioralyte sponsored O’Byrne Cup makes its return on Saturday and ahead of our trip to Echelon Park in Aughrim to take on Wicklow, Robbie Brennan and his selectors have unveiled the inaugural selection of the new season, with debuts aplenty in store.

In total, there are ten players among the starting XV set to make their competitive debuts for the county and a further ten players named on the replacements bench who could make their first appearance in a Meath senior jersey.

The first of the debutants on the side is goalkeeper Finn Moore from Rathkenny who impressed during the Club Championship and he will have the trio of Oran Smullen, Ger Dwane and Shane Gibney in front of him, all of whom are making their debuts.

Two of the Leinster U-20 winning side from 2024 feature in the half back line with John O’Regan making a first senior appearance since the O’Byrne Cup game against Longford two years ago.  O’Regan will line out at centre back, with his former U-20 teammate Killian Smyth at right half back making his debut and the returning Ross Ryan at left half back.

There is a familiar pairing at midfield from the club scene as the Dunshaughlin duo of Conor Gray and Charlie O’Connor team up for the first time in a Meath senior jersey.

There are a further two debuts handed out in the half forward line as Rian McConnell and Oisín Martin make their bow at centre forward and left half forward respectively.  Daithí McGowan completes the line, 7 seasons on from making his debut.

Like every other line on the pitch, there is a fresh look to the full forward line with Diarmuid Moriarty providing the experience alongside the two players making their first appearance at corner forward.  Gary Breslin lines out at top of the right and Niall Finnerty at top of the left.

In addition to Ross Ryan, this game could also see the return to the Meath jersey of Darragh Campion who, like the Summerhill defender, wasn’t part of the panel for the 2025 season.
