Can the Navan clubs survive or will they have one last dance?

Can the Navan clubs survive or will they have one last dance?

After a staggered start to the weekend of action where there was one game apiece on Wednesday and Thursday, the action moves up a couple of gears this evening (Friday) with four games on the bill across the Fairyhouse Steel Senior Football Championship, Meade Farm Intermediate Football Championship and the Coolrite Junior B Football Championship.

There is already one Navan club in a Relegation Final after Navan O’Mahonys lost out to Ballivor in Thursday’s semi-final of the Meade Farm Intermediate Football Championship Relegation Playoff and by the time the action comes to a close this evening, there is the possibility that all three clubs from the town could be deep in the relegation quagmire with Simonstown Gaels facing off against Meath Hill in the Senior semi-final and Bective up against Curraha in the Intermediate grade.

Castletown is the venue for the meeting of Simonstown Gaels and Meath Hill and last year’s Intermediate grade winners will fancy their chances of picking up the win after a confidence boosting victory over Rathkenny a fortnight ago.  By contrast, the Navan side didn’t win a game in the Championship, ending up with two defeats and a draw to their name.

Simonstown changed goalkeeper during the Championship and the dead ball striking of Ben Hoey is a live option for them while it will be interesting to see how the partnership of Tadhg Hanrahan and Sean Tobin fares against Jack Slavin and Ryan Owens.

Meath Hill will once more be backed by their fanatical supporters who will make the short journey in huge numbers and they will help make the venue a raucous one should the ‘Hill get on top at any stage.

Cormac Sheehy was the man of the hour a few weeks ago and he will need a big showing once more as will Gary Breslin.  Simonstown are likely to look to Eoghan Gough and the ever-reliable Padraig McKeever to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Ashbourne is the venue for the meeting of Kilbride and St. Patrick’s in the Meade Farm Intermediate Football Championship quarter-final and this game is live on Clubber.

Kilbride come into this game with a 100% record in the group stages whereas St. Patrick’s were motoring well with two wins from two before the air deflated in Round 3 when they were convincingly defeated by Moynalvey.

It was at this very same hurdle in 2024 that Kilbride fell when losing out to eventual winners Meath Hill but their opponents tonight will have bad memories of a game at this stage in this venue of a few years ago when they lost out on penalties to near neighbours Duleek-Bellewstown.

Conor McWeeney is back from injury for Kilbride and he along with Josh Harford will carry much of the weight of expectation in their attack as will Jamie Murphy and Donal Landy for the ‘Pats.

Fr. Tully Park in Seneschalstown will host its second Relegation Playoff Semi-Final of the week this evening when Bective take on Curraha.

Curraha were relegated from the Senior ranks last year and will be anxious not to suffer a second successive relegation but confidence within the group cannot be high.  The same has to be the case with Bective who also lost all three games in the group.  This once could be very nervy.

The fourth game of the evening is the Coolrite Junior B Football Championship semi-final between St. Mary’s and Cortown in Paddy O’Brien Park.  Both enjoyed impressive group campaigns, finishing off with two wins and a draw apiece.

Cortown are the more experienced with can often prove crucial in games like this but St. Mary’s are benefitting from a few impressive seasons in the Minor grade with a recent influx of youth to their ranks.
