Opening weekend of action hots up in football championships
Opening weekend of action hots up in football championships

After the thrills and spills of the action on Friday evening, the action moves up a notch on Saturday with ten games across the four first team Championships and the first of the Premier Football Championship action also taking place.

There are three games in the Fairyhouse Steel Senior Football Championship with possibly the most eye catching seeing Dunshaughlin and Donaghmore/Ashbourne meet in Ratoath at 16:00.  Dunshaughlin are regarded by many as the coming side in the Senior ranks and further laid claim to that title when dismantling Seneschalstown in the JM Food Services Division 2 Football League Final.  Donaghmore/Ashbourne are perennial contenders and this is a fascinating renewal of last years clash at the same venue which Dunshaughlin edged, thanks in part to a Mathew Costello masterclass.

2023 Meade Farm IFC winners Rathkenny take on Trim in Páirc Tailteann at 18:00 and there is sure to be little to choose from between the sides.  Trim have named Aaron Lynch among the substitutes and how much action he sees could play a crucial role in the outcome of the game. as could the midfield battle between Donal Keogan and the ageless James Macken for Rathkenny and Rob Bourke and Tadhg Carty for Trim.  But maybe the Rathkenny trump card could be Keith Curtis who was electric in last years IFC triumph.

It’s a repeat of the Championship opener of 2022 for St. Colmcille’s and Seneschalstown when they meet in their Group C opening round encounter in Stamullen at 18:00.  On that occasion Seneschalstown won out before losing to the same opposition in the Relegation semi-final later that season.  With fully fit panels there is little to separate them but Seneschalstown have major injury problems at the moment and the ‘Cilles are shorn of the services of Christian Finlay and David Bell.  Any predictions here could make you look silly as anything could happen.

Beaten finalists in the Meade Farm IFC for the last two years, Duleek-Bellewstown are back to make it third time lucky this year and they open up against Longwood in Dunsany.  Ballivor take on Castletown in Sean Newman Park and both of these sides have ambitions of going all the way while the third IFC game sees St. Patrick’s and Oldcastle meet in Páirc Tailteann at 16:00 in what is a game not to be missed.

Then in Donore at 18:00, last years Balreask Bar, Restaurant & Guest Accomodation JFC winners Kibride will open up with a clash against St. Michael’s.  How will they cope with the thinner air of the Meade Farm IFC environment?

The two Balreask Bar, Restaurant & Guest Accomodation JFC games sees St. Ultan’s and Syddan meet as well as St. Vincent’s and Ballinlough.

And in the Coolrite JBFC, Clonard and Carnaross will be in action in Athboy.
