The main event in Pairc Tailteann is the Fairyhouse Steel Senior Football Championship quarter final meeting of near neighbours Simonstown and Wolfe Tones. Simonstown, under the management of former Wolfe Tones manager Gordon Ward came through Group B unbeaten but will face the toughest test yet of their credentials against a seasoned Wolfe Tones side.
Wolfe Tones by contrast fell to defeat against Summerhill in Round 2 but bounced back in impressive fashion against Ballinabrackey to copperfasten their place in the last eight. Having won the Comortas Peile na nGaeltacht in June, they are looking to win what would be an unusual and rare double by also winning the Senior Football Championship in the same year.
It’s likely to be tight in Navan and extra-time cannot be ruled out.
The curtain raiser is the eagerly awaited Meade Farm Intermediate Football Championship quarter final between Walterstown and Rathkenny. Twelve months ago Walterstown fell at this hurdle in a fall akin to Devon Loch in the Grand National when they threw away a match winning position against Nobber in Kells.
After a winter spent scratching their heads as to how they didn’t win that game, they now find themselves back at the same stage and facing a much fancied Rathkenny outfit.
Rathkenny also fell at this hurdle last year when losing out narrowly to eventual winners Dunshaughlin and they will be looking to push on and make a bold bid for honours. Neither side lack for experience or young talent coming through and just like the Senior game, extra-time is a live possibility.
The Senior Championship Relegation quarter final in Batterstown sees Na Fianna and Seneschalstown meet. Na Fianna come into the game as favourites but will Seneschalstown perform another escape act? And in Summerhill, will Skryne survive or will they be plunged into the relegation semi-final by Ballinabrackey?
