‘Cilles down Ratoath to secure top spot

The last remaining pieces of the jigsaw for the quarter finals of the Fairyhouse Steel Senior Football Championship and the Meade Farm Intermediate Football Championship slotted into place on Sunday afternoon as some clubs booked their place in the last eight while others saw their aspirations dashed and must now look towards the dreaded relegation playoffs.

Reigning champions Ratoath missed out on topping their group when falling to a six point defeat to St. Colmcille’s, a result which booked the Jody Devine managed team top spot in the group and which meant that Moynalvey’s wonderful win over Skryne in Dunshaughlin ultimately proved to be in vain.

In Group D, all eyes were on Trim where Ballinabrackey and Wolfe Tones did battle in an all or nothing clash.  Backed by a strong breeze which blew towards the town goals in the opening half, Wolfe Tones built up a six point leat at the interval and it was an advantage they never looked in danger of relinquishing.  Try as they did, Ballinabrackey couldn’t get any momentum generated in the second half and Wolfe Tones won out by three points.

The other game in the group was a dead rubber and it saw a much changed Summerhill defeat Gaeil Colmcille by nine points, 1-14 to 0-08.

In Grouo C of the Meade Farm Intermediate Football Championship, Ballivor cruised past Longwood in St. Finian’s Park, Clonard as they laid down a marker that they could be serious contenders for outright honours while in Slane, Walterstown had thirteen points to spare over Nobber.  Walterstown topped the group with Ballivor coming second.

Group D saw top of the table St. Patrick’s topple Dunderry who got off to a great start but were unable to stay on top while in the winner takes all game in Drumconrath, Meath Hill downed Bective by fourteen points, a winning margin few if anyone would have predicted in advance of the throw in.

The sole game in the Coolrite Junior B Football Championship saw Clonard win a first Championship game in four years when they eased to victory over Eastern Gaels in Batterstown.  And they did it in style, winning out by thirty-four points.
