Meath GAA offers its condolences to the friends and family of Peter Darby R.I.P.
Peter Darby was one of Meath’s all-time greats and a Trim legend.
Gaels throughout Meath have significantly been saddened by the news of the passing of the county’s 1967 All-Ireland winning captain Peter Darby.
Peter was a corner-back on the team that beat Cork in the final and subsequently led the team on their historic trip to Australia in the Spring of 1968 where they won all 5 of their games.
He was one of the county’s finest ever dual stars and wore the green and gold with great distinction in hurling as well as football.
He was captain of the only Trim team to win the Keegan Cup in 1962 having already won 5 SHC medals with the club in 1955, 56, 57, 59 and ’60.
He scored 4-2 in the 1956 SHC Final while still a teenager.
He also won a Feis Cup medal in 1961.
He won 3 Leinster SFC medals in 1964, ’66 and ’67.
He was Guest of Honour at the county SFC Final in 1997 when he performed the ceremonial throw-in, and in 2017, he was inducted into the county’s Hall of Fame.
Peter also won an O’Byrne Cup medal in 1967 and a Div 2 NHL medal in 1962.
He was chosen as a left full-back on the Sárpheileadóir team in 1964 and 1966…that was the scheme which was the forerunner of the All-Stars teams which weren’t introduced until 1971.
