Can Na Fianna claim a first victory over high flying Kilmessan?

The penultimate round of action in the Hurling Championships for the primary grades gets underway this evening with the showpiece game of the evening taking place in Batterstown at 19:00 as Na Fianna take on table toppers Kilmessan in the Ted Murtagh Clothing & Footwear SHC.

Na Fianna are rooted to the bottom of the table with three defeats from their three games to date and have a score difference of -24.  By contrast, their opponents this evening sit atop of the table with two wins and a draw to their name and have a healthy score differential of +13.

Rory Fagan misses out on the starting side for Na Fianna which represents a major blow to their chances and much of the threat in their attack will likely now come from Ronan Byrne and the Bright brothers, Oisín and Eoin. They will require big performances in defence from the Doherty brothers Cian and Jake on the left flank and as always the likes of Stephen Slevin and Peter Slevin will be looked on as the two to provide the leadership in the defence.

Kilmessan have been regarded as the coming side in Meath hurling for a few years now and their performances in this year’s Championship to date suggests that their day might be coming quicker than some might have predicted.  An opening round draw against the reigning champions Ratoath was significant but they have since backed it up impressively when despatching neighbouring Kiltale in Round 2 and old foes Trim in Round 3.

Sean Doyle has been one of the form forwards in the county across the opening rounds and he forms one third of a deadly inside line of the attack along with team captain Mark Horan and Conor Horan.  Further outfield in the attack, the vastly experienced and ever-wily Kevin Keena brings his own brand of leadership to the party while in goals Sean Power has done excellently to date.
