Gerry
Reilly U-16 FT Final - Report
Meath
4-9 Dublin 0-12
Dublin were all over Meath in the
opening quarter of Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Final played in Oldcastle
on Sunday evening and looked odds on to retain the Gerry Reilly
Cup. They had 6 unanswered points before Meath’s first score in
the 20 th minute with a Brian Menton point. Dublin responded with
a quick point. Emmett Boyle added another point to Meath’s score.
Then almost against the run of play, Meath got their first goal
after a pass from Padraig McKeever was finished to the net by
Meath’s midfielder, Damien Carroll. This seemed to lift Meath
and a second Damien Carroll goal that gave Meath the lead for
the first time had the large crowd present brimming with excitement.
An Adam Baxter point from a free for Dublin had the sides level
at the break. Despite all the recent rain, the pitch was in remarkable
condition and it turned out a lovely evening for football.
H/T: Meath 2-2 Dublin 0-8
An Emmett Boyle point from a free
put Meath back in front. When Emmett Boyle got Meath’s 3 rd goal,
they seemed to be in the driving seat. But Dublin never gave up
and reduced the gap. At all times the game was played at a great
intensity and enthusiasm by both teams. Meath extended their lead
to 6 points, but Dublin pulled back to 4 points and were still
well in it. But when substitute, Eoin Murray got Meath’s 4 th
goal, there was no way back for Dublin .
Meath deserved their victory over
the hour with a great team effort for their first victory in the
tournament since 2003, despite their shaky start.
Meath’s Damien Carroll received the
‘Man of the match’ award with a terrific display on the night.
All the teams will have benefited
greatly from the competition and augurs well for the future and
no doubt many will go on to represent their teams at senior level.
This year alone many of the present Meath & Dublin senior
teams played for their county in the Gerry Reilly FT.

Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Final
Meath v Dublin (At Oldcastle)
-----------------------------------------------------------
This is the 19 th anniversary
of the Gerry Reilly Memorial U-16 Inter-County Football Tournament
and sees the defending champions, Dublin taking on arch rivals
Meath in the final on Sunday next, 29 July in Oldcastle . When
the two teams met earlier in Round 2, it was Meath who came out
on top on a scoreline of 1-15 to 0-13 in a great game. No doubt
Dublin feel that they can turn the tables this time and retain
the title, but Meath will be determined to lift the trophy they
last won in 2003.
The competition has proved a great
success in providing a platform to launch inter-county football
careers.
- Val-u - Kitchens & Bedrooms from Gleneagle are the Main
Sponsors of the tournament.

game in the tournament by Peter and Patricia Caffrey of Interior

– Round 2 Report
Meath 1-15 Dublin 0-13
The large crowd present were treated
to a cracking game of football which saw Meath overcome Dublin
in the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT played in Oldcastle on Sunday evening
(1 July). Rain before the start, as well as heavy rain earlier
in the day seemed to make no difference to both teams as they
showed great skills and determination. A David Larkin point
from a free opened the scoring and followed by a point from
play by Mark O’Sullivan to put Meath 2 points up. Darragh Stapleton
levelled matters with 2 pointed frees for Dublin . Meath were
very much in the ascendancy at this stage and added 8 more points
to their tally to Dublin ’s 2 additional points before the break.
This included some fantastic points from play.
H/T: Meath 0-10 Dublin 0-4
An Emmet Boyle point put Meath further
ahead on the re-start, but then Dublin came much more into the
game. Dublin added 3 unanswered points to their tally and in
this period Meath’s ‘keeper, Cillian Comaskey, brought off a
marvellous save. Substitute, Cathal Hilliard, steadied things
for Meath with a fine point. This was followed by what turned
out to be the crucial score when Padraig McKeever found the
Dublin net after a long run. Dublin put a lot of pressure on
the Meath defence and again were thwarted by great saves from
the Meath ‘keeper. Play was literally flying up and down the
field with Dublin adding 5 points to Meath’s three after the
goal. No doubt both counties have some great prospects for the
future.

Gerry
Reilly U-16 FT – Round 3 Reports
Dublin 2-11 Westmeath 1-13
(After extra time)
Dublin
booked their place to meet Meath in the final of the Gerry Reilly
U-16 FT by defeating a game Westmeath side by the narrowest of
margins after extra time on Sunday evening (8 July) in Oldcastle.
It was an enthralling game from beginning to end. Westmeath led
for most of normal time, but Dublin forced a draw with time running
out. Both sides still had chances to snatch the win, but both
defences held out to finish level at Westmeath 1-9 to Dublin ’s
2-6.
In the first period of extra time
Dublin had their best period of the game with 5 unanswered points
and looked to be in the driving seat. However, Westmeath took
the game to Dublin in the second period with 4 unanswered points
to leave a single point between the sides. A replay looked on
the cards, but Dublin held out for a hard earned victory. It was
a terrific game of football, played with great determination by
both sides and augurs well for the future of both counties.
- Dublin ’s
centre field, Eoghan Keogh received the ‘Man of the match’ award.
Scorers for Dublin:

Westmeath 1-12 Kildare 0-11
A Kildare defensive error
well into injury time gave Westmeath’s Eoin Gorman the goal opportunity
that ensured victory in the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Round 2 game
played on Saturday evening. Kildare started well, but eventually
Westmeath came more into the game and brought the sides back to
0-4 each. Westmeath then went on to lead at the break by 0-8 to
0-6.
Westmeath started the second half
strongly with 2 unanswered points. Kildare’s ‘keeper saved Alan
Fitzpatrick’s penalty shot out for a 45. This seemed to have lifted
Kildare and they closed the gap to a single point. Indeed they
could have taken the lead had they capitalised on all their chances.
But it was Westmeath that got the vital score for a hard earned
victory. The game was played at a hectic pace throughout with
marvellous football skills displayed from both sides.
Westmeath’s, Alan Fitzpatrick, received

We are very grateful to Gerry's parents, Al (R.I.P.) and Claire, who kindly donated the cup for this competition. The competition has proved a great success in providing a platform to launch inter-county football careers. This year is no exception with Dublin crowned Leinster Champions and Cavan through in the All-Ireland Qualifiers, with many of the Cavan and Dublin teams having played here in the Gerry Reilly FT. We wish them every success in their endeavours to capture the All-Ireland title.
